IMPROV: August 2022
Sivarulrasa Gallery presented CATHERINE GUTSCHE: IMPROV, an installation that explores themes of improvisation in nature and in her practice as an artist. “I explore my attachments to the landscape and the environment – manmade and natural”, she says. “I want to capture an element of continuous entropy in the exterior world, crystallizing it into a permanent depiction of a single instant.”
The show featured seven new paintings in acrylic and mixed media, from the exuberant “Scarlet Bergamot” to the mysterious “Salmon Run”. The installation brought elements of the artist’s environment into the Gallery. Leaves and twigs were suspended from the ceiling in a “Twig Rain”. River rocks and found objects formed a “Rust River”, as water and time transform rocks and oxidize metals. A slice of a pine tree that had to be removed near the artist’s home, as it was beginning to die, was juxtaposed with shards of glass.

River (2021)
Glass shards surround the main 3 elements reflecting the concept of water and the bubbles that one can see in river rapids. Their many colours are inspired by the light shining through the trees. 3D bubbles were created with the painted fabric knots. The lines of trees and underwater elements were created with metal sticks. The green hue describes the forest canopy in the calm areas of the river.
