ARTIST'S RESIDENCY
Pouch Cove, Newfoundland, Canada, January 2025: Since its founding in 1990 by James Baird, The Pouch Cove Foundation (incorporated in 1997) has provided a retreat for more than one thousand visiting artists from around the world, at its facilities on the Northern Avalon Peninsula in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The Pouch Cove Foundation operates on an invitation-only basis and invites artists to participate in its residency program on an ongoing basis. (2025 will be its final year of operation)

Originally a fishing community it is now principally a dormitory town for people working in the city and home to a large retirement population. It is at the northern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the eastern edge of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The Town whose motto is “First to see the sun” has a children’s playground area, a park with swimming facilities, a small library and blueberry picking grounds. It hosts a convenience store, take out, a garage, a pharmacy, liquor agency and a few other small businesses. The East Coast Trail, a popular route for hikers, runs through Pouch Cove, and continues both north and south along almost the entire eastern coast of the Avalon Peninsula.

The Pouch Cove Foundation provides equipped live/work space for a calendar month in exchange for the donation of a mutually acceptable work of art. Upon invitation the artist and the Pouch Cove Foundation agree on a suitable month for the artist’s residency. Catherine was invited to Pouch Cove Foundation for the month of January 2025.
